Purpose
The booklet is composed to analyse three distinct video essays about the cinematography between the 50s and 70s. The purpose of the book design is to visually return the settings of the films, giving back an idea of consistency.
Contents
The first part investigates the theme of abstract settings in Michelangelo Antonioni’s films L’Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961) and L’Eclisse (1962).
The second part focuses on several scenes of famous Italian films about the theme of incommunicability. It deals with the characters speaking on a black phone. Though some people don’t know anything about the ‘black phone’ theme, it established as a topos in the post-war years. It was born in contrast to the so-called ‘white phone’ cinema, popular in Italy during the Fascist period. Finally, the third part concerns the title design by Saul and Elaine Basse for John Frankenheimer’s film Seconds (1966).
